Finally, we applied the Fe–N–C:HO catalysts in a cathode of an assembled FC systems. We compared the performance and methanol response of two kinds of AEMDMFCs with the Fe–N–C:HO catalysts and commercial Pt/C catalysts in the cathode. Quaternary ammonia polysulfone (QAPSF) was empolyed as the electrolyte [55]. The alkaline environment in the AEMDMFC satisfies the SIE condition, and then the influence of methanol was investigated by injecting methanol with the oxygen gas. Figure 5a and c shows

Direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) have been recognized as a promising type of power sources to solve the energy shortage and environmental pollution from fossil energy consumption. However, their commercialization is still hindered by two major problems, the high cost of Pt-based catalysts and the crossover of methanol from anodes to cathodes. In the second problem, the methanol molecules can poison the Pt-based catalysts and lower the cell voltages by reacting with oxygen.
