贾平凹有自己“心目中的小说”，“说话”、“精神”、“实与虚”、“中与西”等四个层面体现了贾平凹的小说创作思想和创作实践的一贯追求。为了努力实践自己心目中的小说理想，贾平凹在小说创作理论领域和创作实践领域锐意探索，在追求和实践的矛盾中小说创作理论不断丰富不断完善，小说创作也不断推进不断成熟。
