中国与西罗马是古代世界两个类型不同的文明中心。它们在社会政治经济形态、文化思想意识、社会功能结构等方面 ,有着极大的差异。正是因为这种差异 ,使它们对来自北方游牧民族的冲击产生了不同后果 :一个解除了这种威胁 ,并将这种威胁远逐他方 ,迫使其向另一文明中心转移 ;而另一文明中心却在这种冲击浪潮中灭亡了。究其根本原因 ,在于汉文化的内聚力和辐射力要比古罗马文化更为强大
