甲午战后，岳阳、长沙、常德和湘潭相继通过条约被辟为自开商埠，拉开了近代湖南商业货栈兴起的序幕。作为抵御列强入侵、维护本国利益的策略，清政府给予湖南商行自主设栈的便利。与此同时，转运业的发达及振兴农村经济的迫切需求，也为近代湖南商业货栈业的产生提供了必要的条件。近代货栈业凭借在市场调控、赈灾救荒以及节约经费等方面的优势，满足和适应了湖南社会的发展，逐渐形成遍及各大市镇的货物集散体系，更推动运输业、商业和金融业联合发展。
