两汉时期是中国历史上的第一个人口高峰期。在东汉总人口数比西汉略有下降的情况下。湖南四郡的人口却出现了快速增长，总户数由西汉时占全国总户数的1％上升到了6．7％；总人口由西汉时占全国总人口的1．2％上升到了5．7％。其增长的主要原因在于；人口的大量迁入；湖南地区的开发和经济的发展；相对于北方而言未受到大的自然灾害的破坏；以及由赋税的相对优惠到“可比汉人，增其租赋”政策，等等。

The first population summit of Chinese history appeared in the Han Dynasty. The general population of Eastern Han slightly reduced than those in Western Han while population increased rapidly in the four prefectures of Hunan district where the number of households was one percent of the whole population in Western Han but it rose to 6.7 percent in Eastern Han and the number of population rose from 1.2 to 5.7 percent.
