源流探讨由来有自.船山诗歌源流探讨比起前人或同时稍晚的一些学者来有其别开生面之处:首先,他将这种探讨建构在读诗、识诗和选诗的基础之上,分别从诗歌的发展变化及其相互关系中,从诗歌内部的艺术构造与特征中,从诗人的创作地位、特色中对诗体源流、作品渊源和创作继承进行了全面具体的探讨;其次,他将这种探讨又建构在他的诗学理论之上,其诗学理论既以他的哲学作基础,又以儒家"兴观群怨"诗教为核心.但在具体阐析时,改变了传统的诗教政治伦理观念,赋予了它新的理论意义与价值.方法与理论的结合,使船山源流探讨进入了更高的诗学层面.
