近代中美第一个不平等条约——《望厦条约》的签订，与美国传教士裨治文有着密切的关系。裨治文在澳门创办的《中国丛报》是美国政府刺探中国情报的平台，不仅发布涉及中国政治军事的文章，还对中美订约提出了许多建议，为《望厦条约》的签订做好了舆论上的准备。此外，裨治文还直接参与条约的谈判与翻译，利用清政府缺乏外交人员的弊端，为美国窃取了不少特权。
