坐落在衡阳湘江之滨的湖南三师被誉为湘南革命的摇篮，因为这里建立了湘南地区的第一个党支部——中共湖南三师党支部（湘南第一党支部），为湘南革命培养了大批优秀人才，推动了湘南革命的蓬勃发展。随着近代民族危机的不断加深、新文化运动的蓬勃兴起、早期中共党员特别是恽代英和毛泽东同志的大力推进，马克思主义在湖南三师快速地传播开来。湖南三师进步师生在湘南革命的摇篮里开启了思想觉醒的新征程，他们在信仰马克思主义氛围的熏陶中，逐步确立马克思主义信仰并最终筑牢马克思主义信仰根基，为湘南第一党支部的成立奠定了坚实的思想基础。
