<jats:title>Abstract</jats:title><jats:p>This study aimed to investigate the effects of fermented tofu processing wastewater (FTPW) on the growth performance and meat quality of Xianghuang broilers. A total of 160 six‐week‐old Xianghuang broilers were randomly assigned to control or FTPW groups with eight replicate pens of 10 birds each pen. Broilers received the same corn‐soybean diet but different water. Broilers received ordinary water in the control group and 40% (volume: volume) FTPW (the solution has been filtered with four layers of sieve, containing <jats:italic>Bacillus</jats:italic> 1.52 × 10<jats:sup>−7</jats:sup> CFU/mL) in FTPW group. The experiment lasted for 30 days. Results indicated that growth performance was not affected by treatment (<jats:italic>p </jats:italic>> 0.05). The value of pH<jats:sub>45 min</jats:sub> and <jats:italic>a</jats:italic><jats:sub>48 h</jats:sub> increased and drip loss<jats:sub>72 h</jats:sub> and toughness decreased in breast muscle when broilers received FTPW solution compared with the control group (<jats:italic>p</jats:italic> < 0.05). The pH<jats:sub>45 min</jats:sub>, <jats:italic>a</jats:italic><jats:sub>45 min</jats:sub>, <jats:italic>a</jats:italic><jats:sub>48 h</jats:sub> value and crude fat concentration of thigh muscle were higher in FTPW group than that in control group (<jats:italic>p</jats:italic> < 0.05). Compared with control group, fibre area decreased but fibre density increased in thigh muscle when Xianghuang chickens supplemented with FTPW solution (<jats:italic>p</jats:italic> < 0.05). Supplementation of FTPW solution in drinking water significantly decreased malondialdehyde content in the breast muscle of Xianghuang chickens (<jats:italic>p</jats:italic> < 0.05). Gene expressions such as carnitine palmitoyltransferase 1A (CPT1) and glycogen synthase of breast muscle were downregulated in experimental group when compared with control group. In conclusion, FTPW supplementation in drinking water could improve meat quality of Xianghuang broilers by regulating pH value, redness and fibre morphology.</jats:p>

<jats:title>Abstract</jats:title><jats:p>Fibre plays an important role in diluting dietary energy density. Fibre is also implicated in the regulation of appetite, perhaps through direct effects in the brain. However, there is little information on this effect in pigs. Therefore, this study was conducted to investigate the effect of fibre type in regulating the expression of genes involved in appetite control, inflammationand antioxidant defence in the hypothalamus of weaned piglets. A total of 64 Duroc × Landrace × Yorkshire barrows at 37 days old were blocked bybody weight and allotted to two dietary treatments, supplementation with either 0.25% cellulose (Solka‐Floc) or inulin (INU) for 28 days, after which animals were killed for analysis. Pigs fed INU had a tendency (<jats:italic>p</jats:italic> = 0.06) for reduced feed intake in the first week, although this effect disappeared in subsequent weeks. Pigs supplemented with INU had lower expression of dopamine (dopamine receptor D2), serotonin (5‐hydroxytryptamine receptor 1B), free fatty acid (GPR43) and neuropeptide Y receptor Y2 receptors in the hypothalamus (<jats:italic>p</jats:italic> < 0.05). Expression of the <jats:italic>tryptophan hydroxylase 2</jats:italic> gene in the hypothalamus also tended (<jats:italic>p</jats:italic> = 0.09) to be lower for pigs fed INU. The abundance of antioxidant defence genes, <jats:italic>superoxide dismutase</jats:italic> (<jats:italic>SOD1</jats:italic>) and <jats:italic>catalase</jats:italic>, were greater (<jats:italic>p</jats:italic> < 0.05)but that of a proinflammatory gene, <jats:italic>interleukin 1β</jats:italic>, was lower (<jats:italic>p</jats:italic> < 0.05) in the hypothalamus of pigs fed INU. Therefore, consumption of INU causes downregulation of inflammation in the hypothalamus and regulation of the abundance of serotonin or dopamine receptors, and may also increase antioxidant defence through upregulation of SOD and catalase in weaned piglets.</jats:p>

The low decomposition voltage (similar to 1.23 V) of water enormously restricts the workable voltage of aqueous symmetrical supercapacitors (SSCs), which correspondingly limits the energy densities and frustrates the commercialization of aqueous SSCs. Herein, the voltage window of an all-solid-state symmetrical supercapacitors (ASSC) can be extended via employing a novel self-supporting hybrid electrode constructed by coupling FeNiCo oxides with Ni(pyrithione)(2) on FeNi foam (denoted as NiPT@FeNiCo oxides/FNF) as both cathode and anode, which was synthesized using two-step hydrothermal processes. Primarily due to the introduction of redox-active pyrithione ligand chelating Ni ions supplemented by multiple pairs of reversible redox reactions to suppress water splitting, the assembled ASSC device exhibits an extra-wide workable voltage window up to 3.2 V with ultrahigh energy exporting densities (69.9 Wh kg(-1) at 173.9 W kg(-1), and 29.1 Wh kg(-1) even at an elevated 2437.6 W kg(-1)). The energy density feature of this assembled ASSC device is superior to most existing transition metal oxide-based supercapacitors and even asymmetric or hybrid devices heretofore reported. After 10,000 cycles, this assembled ASSC device records a 92.5 % retention of initial area specific capacity. Our work offers a robust combination strategy to design high-potential electrode materials for constructing high-voltage ASSCs.

To study the effects of dietary energy level on the meat quality of different muscles in finishing pigs, 400 Xiangcun Black pigs (BW 1/4 79.55 & PLUSMN; 4.77 kg) were randomly assigned to 5 treatments with varied calculated digestive energy (DE) at 3,050, 3,100, 3,150, 3,200 and 3,250 kcal/kg, respectively. Each treatment had 8 replicates with 10 pigs per replicate. Meat quality, amino acid and fatty acid composition were tested in this study. No differences in average daily gain, average daily feed intake or feed-to-gain ratio (P > 0.05) were observed among dietary treatments. Glycogen concentrations of longissimus dorsi (LD) muscle in DE3150 was higher than those in other groups (P < 0.05). The crude fat concentration of biceps femoris (BF) muscle in DE3250 tended to be higher than that in DE3150 and DE3100 groups (P < 0.05). Pigs in DE3250 and DE3200 had higher fiber density and smaller cross-sectional area of BF muscle than those in DE3150 (P < 0.05). Pigs in DE3150 had the highest Cu concentration in LD muscle compared with those in DE3200, DE3250 (P < 0.05). The C16:1 proportion of LD muscle was lower (P < 0.01) and C20:1 was higher (P < 0.05) in DE3050 than that in the other dietary treatments. The C18:3n6 and C20:3n6 proportions of BF muscle in DE3150 were higher than those in DE 3050, DE3200 and DE3250 (P < 0.05). For LD muscle, mRNA ex-pressions of type I and IIa MyHC in group DE3150 were higher than other treatments (P < 0.01). The LD muscle in DE3150 expressed higher PPARd than in other groups (P < 0.01). Pigs in DE3100 expressed higher FOX1 than in DE3200 and DE3250 (P < 0.05). Sterol-regulatory element binding proteins (SREBPa) mRNA expression decreased linearly when dietary energy level increased in BF muscle (P < 0.01). In conclusion, a 200 kcal/kg decrease in digestible energy for 4 consecutive weeks did not affect growth performance of Xiangcun Black pigs. Furthermore, LD and BF muscle respond differently to dietary energy level, and meat quality was improved by the medium energy level during the finishing phase. The cyclic dimer 1,8-diazacyclotetradecane-2,9-dione is one of the most important components of caprolactam solution concentrates and triggers significant agglomeration during the recovery process in industrial polyamide-6 plants. For this reason, the agglomeration behaviour and morphology changes of cyclic dimers in solution concentrates were investigated. Precipitates separated from an similar to 80 wt.% solution concentrate were explored. Cyclic dimers aggregated in the solution concentrates at lower temperatures to form larger, thicker, and compacted structures or multi-layers structures. An appropriate increase in the solution temperature and addition of fresh caprolactam aid in avoiding agglomeration, but high temperatures (over 140 degrees) initiate the hydrolytic polymerisation of caprolactam in the solution concentrate, which aggravates blockages. <jats:p>The aim of this experiment was to evaluate the effects of replacing distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) with fermented DDGS (FDDGS) on meat quality and serum amino acid profiles in Chinese yellow broilers. Forty-eight 42-day-old male Chinese yellow broilers were randomly allotted to the treatments. Each treatment was replicated six times with four birds per replicate. Both groups received a basal corn-soybean diet that was supplemented with either 20% DDGS or 20% FDDGS. Broilers were euthanized at 70 days old. The right half of each breast was evaluated for meat quality. Both breast and thigh meats were evaluated for proximate and fatty acid composition. Serum from blood samples was analysed to quantify relative amounts of free amino acids. Breast meat from broilers supplemented with FDDGS had a lower pH and less drip loss than those supplemented with DDGS (P <0.05). No differences were detected between treatments in the proximate composition of breast and thigh meat (P >0.05). Myristic acid (C14:0) concentration of thigh muscles was reduced for broilers supplemented with FDDGS compared with those supplemented with DDGS (P<0.05). Concentrations of lysine, taurine, alpha-aminoadipic acid, glycine, and 3-methylhistidine in serum were all lower for broilers supplemented with FDDGS than for those supplemented with DDGS (P< 0.05). Meanwhile, the serum phosphoserine concentration of the FFDS-supplemented broilers was greater than those supplemented with DDGS (P<0.05). In conclusion, replacing 20% DDGS with a like amount of FDDGS can be recommended for diets of growing broiler chickens.Keywords: fatty acids, meat quality, shear force</jats:p>

<jats:p>This experiment was conducted to research the effects of different dietary levels of lactic acid bacterial (LAB) in sows’ diet during lactation on piglet growth performance, serum biochemical indices and amino acid of sows. 40 late gestation (110 d) sows with parity 3 or 4 were randomly divided into 5 groups with 8 sows per group. 0, 50, 100, 200, 300 mL Lactobacillus liquid (live LAB concentration was ≥1 *109 CFU/mL) was fed per sow per day for experimental groups L0, L50, L100, L200, L300, respectively. The durations of the test were 35 days. Results showed that, litter weight at weaning from group C grew slower than piglets from groups of L100, L200, L300 (P &lt; 0. 05). Average piglet weight gain from day 1 to 21 of lactation was higher in L200 compared with groups C and L50 (P &lt; 0. 05). Number of weaned pigs increased linearly with dietary LAB level (P = 0.037, r2 = 0.146, y=8.335 + 0.005x). Total litter weight gain from day 0 to 21 increased linearly with the dietary LAB level (P = 0.005, r2 = 0.288, y=15.797 + 0.040x). Serum GLU concentration was smaller in group L50 compared with other groups (P &lt; 0.05). Serum TC concentration was higher in group L100 and lower in groups L200 and L300 (P &lt; 0.05).The values of those amino acids such as leucine, lysine, valine, arginine, cysteine, ornithine were all higher in the sows fed 50 mL LAB than other groups (P &lt; 0.05).In summary, our results have revealed the ability of addition of LAB in sows’ diet during lactation significantly modify piglet growth. Addition of 200 mL LAB liquid seems to be more effective in elevating weight of weaning piglets.</jats:p>
