林安迪 (Andrew Lambert)教授任教于纽约城市大学斯坦顿岛分校 (College of Staten Island)哲学系,美国夏威夷大学比较哲学博士.他师从中西比较哲学家安乐哲教授,是美国比较哲学教学学会的创始人之一.林教授也是学术翻译家,从事中英及日英的哲学著作的翻译,即将出版中国著名学者李泽厚的杰作 《中国古代思想史论》的英文首版.其译文发表在西方比较权威的哲学学报上,如 《Frontiers of Philosophy in China 》《Philosophy East and West 》等.

Abstract Prof. Philip J. Ivanhoe is a renowned historian of Chinese thought, particularly of Confucianism and Neo-Confucianism. He has translated a lot of Chinese philosophical classics and is well known for Readings in Classical Chinese Philosophy, The Daodejing of Laozi and Master Sun’s Art of War. In the interview, Prof. Philip J. Ivanhoe puts forward his opinion and advice on the translation, promotion and acceptance of Chinese philosophy in the English-speaking world, which is of great reference significance to the promotion of Chinese philosophy in the world.

Roger T. Ames is a preeminent scholar and translator of classical Chinese philosophy. Through his interpretive studies and translations, he has probably done more than anyone else to promote literacy on Chinese philosophy in the English-speaking world. His translations are widely appreciated by the readers who are interested in Chinese philosophy. For example, his translation of Sun-Tzu: the Art of Warfare is used at West Point as a textbook. He has also received some prizes issued by the Chinese government like “Confucius Culture Prize” for his successful promotion of Chinese culture. The following is the edited transcript of an interview with Professor Roger Ames who is working at Philosophy Department, University of Hawaii at Manoa. The interview was conducted in 2014 by Xiaoli Tan, a professor of English at Hengyang Normal University, also a visiting scholar to UHM and Tianyuan Huang, a Ph.D. candidate working on Chinese Philosophy and Politics at UHM. The questions discussed include the general situation on the study and translation of Chinese philosophy in contemporary America, different translation models of Chinese philosophy, translation policies concerning English translation of Chinese philosophy, Professor Ames’ collaboration with other translators, some linguistic and cultural problems encountered in translating process, translation strategies, the university presses and the trade houses who publish English translations of Chinese philosophy, the marketing of Professor Ames’ translated works and his advice on “Going-out strategy” of Chinese culture.
